So, you wanna grow out your hair

But you have no flippin’ idea how to do it. We get it- we all want long, healthy, full hair in a matter of seconds, but good things come to those who wait. So if you have more patience than most, here are the steps you can take to ensure that your hair grows naturally with more bounce, body, and shine than before.

1. Get frequent trims

We’ve said this before, and we will continue to say it again- getting a regularly-scheduled hair cut will prevent your split ends from splitting further, and breaking your hair off. So make sure to consult with your stylist and go over a plan that allows you to work around your schedule, life style, budget, and hair goals. Trust us on this one, you don’t wanna wait longer than 8 weeks.

2. Blondes have more fun… kind of.

Even though Kim K makes platinum hair look fun, fresh, and highly achievable, but at the end of the day, going lighter damages your hair cuticle to the point of adding even more split ends. And because we are on a mission to GROW our hair, we’re taking a year’s sabbatical from highlighting and coloring our hair- for the good of our tresses!

3. Massage your scalp, distribute the natural oils

Everyone loves a good head massage, so give yourself one every night before bed! By doing so, you help the oils that are essential for a healthier glow to be evenly distributed throughout your hair. You can do this with your hands, or use a boar bristle brush (less damaging), and do this nightly. It will increase the circulation on your scalp, making it healthier and more susceptible to increased hair growth.

4. Eat right

Diets aren’t just for losing weight, they’re for clear skin, healthier hair, and general nutrition. You are what you eat, so make sure that what you’re putting inside your body is not only beneficial to your health, but also to your hair! Increasing your protein intake will only do wonders for your hair; but if you’re not a meat person, taking supplements and eating foods high in zinc and iron can kick-start that hair growth goal.

Without a proper diet, you could actually lose hair. So let’s start looking at what we eat, and we promise, your hair will grow stronger.

5. Avoid heat styling

If you must heat style your hair (we get it, cause we do it, too), make sure you use a heat protectant. This is an absolute must, and skipping this step will only damage our hair further. By not applying a heat protectant, you open the door to more breakage, lots of frizz, and gnarly split ends. So do yourself and your hair a favor, and either skip out on heat styling, or protect it from the hot tools’ spiking temperature.

6. Don’t shampoo your hair as often

But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t shower. Please do shower every day, but avoid getting your hair wet, if possible. By skipping out on shampooing every day, it give your hair time to distribute the natural and healthy oils throughout your strands (even more so if you massage it nightly, like we suggested). If you’re someone who shampoos every single day, start with skipping one day, and slowly increasing to every 2 days, and then 3. You’ll start to see the difference in no time.

7. Add a vitamin to your A.M. routine

If your diet isn’t supplying you with enough nutrition, a supplement could make a world of difference. Look for multivitamins that are formulated for hair, skin, and nails; those contain biotin and vitamins C & B, which supports healthy hair growth. Plus, your skin will be radiant, and your nails stronger!

8. Rinse with cold water

Hot showers are cozy and inviting, but when it comes to our skin and nails, they’re actually pretty damaging (which is sad, we know). By rinsing with cold water, you allow your hair cuticles to close up and retain most of the moisturizing properties your conditioner offers. That way, you’re definitely getting a bang for your buck.

9. Be gentle when brushing your hair

We know we said to brush your hair every night, but keep in mind that it’s with a boar bristled brush. Why? 1, it’s gentler on your hair; and 2, our hair is 10x more susceptible to breakage when it’s wet, so make sure that you use a wet brush for drenched tresses.

If your hair gets knotted easily, start from the ends and work your way to the top. If you start from the top down, then the knots will eventually compact and bunch up toward the bottom of your hair, and you’re just left with a mess and a need for a haircut.

10. Sleep on a silk pillowcase

Listen, good hair doesn’t happen overnight, but sleeping on a silk pillow case sure makes it seem that way. The reason for that is because silk is easier on the hair, so it helps avoid tangles and breakage. And we all know that the less breakage there is, the more your hair grows!

So, you ready for the journey?

It’s a long one, we know. But the important part about any journey is the investment you’re making- for the better. By the time your hair is nice and grown out, you will already have developed habits that only promote healthy hair.

XOXO,

PIAM.
